Mattress Storage Tips

A quality mattress is essential to providing the comfort and support that ensures you get a good night’s sleep every time. Whether you prefer your mattress soft, firm, king, twin, or somewhere in between, we all can agree that mattresses can make or break the quality of our sleep. So what happens when you’ve found your dream mattress, but you need to move, remodel your bedroom, or find safe-keeping for the old one? Self-storage is a great option for keeping your mattresses out of your hair when you need the space, but it’s important to keep your mattress safe while it’s in the storage unit. Here are some mattress storage tips to ensure your dream sleep can stay your reality.

Mattress Storage Tips

Preparing for Mattress Storage

Clean the Mattress before Storage

If you’ve read any of our previous blog posts, you know that cleaning any object before storage is of the utmost importance. This doesn’t just mean taking all the sheets of a mattress and vacuuming it–you also need to get as much of the odors, sweat, and oils out that the mattress has absorbed over time. Investing in a professional cleaning is certainly recommended, especially if you will be storing the mattress for a long time. However, at home solutions can work for a more short term cleaning. One quick DIY involves sprinkling baking soda on the mattress and letting it set for a few hours to absorb these contaminants before vacuuming it off.

Invest in a Mattress Cover

You can cover your mattress in plastic or fabric wrapping. You do want to make sure that the wrap is breathable so that no humidity will get trapped underneath the cover. These covers will help protect your mattress from any dirt and dust in the storage unit and can help somewhat with keeping pests out. While wrapping in plastic wrap or moving blankets works, you may consider purchasing a higher quality mattress cover if you plan to store the mattress long-term. You may also want to air out your mattress every few months if you are storing long-term.

What’s the Best Mattress Storage?

Climate-Controlled Storage

Like most things, mattresses are susceptible to damage from temperature and climate changes. Investing in storage that is climate-controlled will ensure that your mattress doesn’t grow mold or dry rot from changes in humidity. It will also prevent heat or cold from affecting your mattress in storage. This will ensure your mattress comes out as clean as it went it.

Invest in Pest Control

We aren’t the only creatures who enjoy a nice cozy mattress. Mice, rats, and bugs would be more than happy to make a home in your mattress while it’s stored away. A cover can help prevent them from accessing it, but finding a storage facility that takes pest control precautions and allows you to take your own can help stop them before they even get to the mattress cover. Finding humane traps and deterrents can give your mattress storage extra protection.

Lay the Mattress Flat

The mattress may take up less room on its side, but if you can fit it in your unit, try to store your mattress flat like it would be on a bed. Storing on the side may result in the mattress leaning or folding over time, which could compromise the integrity of your mattress’s structure. Storing the mattress the way it’s used will keep it in better condition, especially if storing for long periods.

Avoid Stacking Items on Top of the Mattress

Putting anything on top of your mattress, even something soft or lightweight, can eventually create an indentation or uneven spot in the mattress. This will also compromise its structure and make it less comfortable to sleep on.

These tips will help make your mattress storage a success so you can keep on having the best sleep of your life even after your move or room remodel.
