Baby Items: Storage Tips
When you first become a parent, it may feel like time is moving slower than ever. You have so many new experiences all at once, some of them even struggles. The first time your child sleeps through the night probably feels like a miracle! Saving all the little moments with your child can make parenthood feel new again every day. But sometimes, you look back and realize the time was flying by, and suddenly your infant has become a toddler, then your toddler has become a first grader. Each stage comes with new experiences and joys, but it also comes with new stuff, and sometimes we get so caught up in each moment that we forget about the old stuff entirely. So what do you do if your home is overflowing with your old baby toys, bottles, clothes, and more?
Self-storage is a great way to clear up clutter in your home and make room for the items needed in the next stage of your child’s life. Especially with your first child, there are bound to be sentimental items that you don’t want to part with. And who knows, if you have more children down the road you may use some of the same items again. Instead of throwing them away, throw them in a storage unit and keep your baby’s closet clutter free.
Here are our storage tips for baby items:
Purge Baby Items You Don’t Want
As much as you may want to keep every baby item from your child’s life, there are bound to be items that you won’t end up using or looking at again. Make sure to go through your baby items before packing them up so you can remove the ones that are no longer needed. This will save you space in the storage unit and you can donate the items so other families will be able to get use out of them that you won’t.
Clean Everything
Wash and dry your baby clothes before storing to ensure they’re clean. Wipe down and disinfect any toys, furniture, or other baby items. You don’t want any baby mess going in your storage unit and attracting pests or growing mold. All of your baby items need to be clean to ensure they come out on the other side usable and ready to be cleaned.
Organize Your Baby Items
Instead of throwing all your baby items randomly into boxes, organize them by the type of item and label the boxes. For small items, investing in plastic bags or smaller boxes can help you keep things even more organized. Plastic bins can allow for easier organization so you can see what baby items are inside each box, but regardless, make sure to label all your boxes so you can find what you’re looking for when you’re ready to go back through the items.
Disassemble Large Items
Large baby items like play furniture, dollhouses, or other toys can take up a lot of space in your storage unit. Instead of throwing them in as is, disassemble these items and store them in containers, or the original box if you have it. This way, you can save space and potentially save money by renting a smaller unit for your baby items.
Remove Batteries
Batteries can breakdown and corrode if left in a toy for too long. This will then cause corrosion to the toy and can cause it to lose its functionality all together. Battery corrosion can also be toxic and children shouldn’t be playing with corroded toys. Keep your toys in good, safe condition by removing the batteries from your battery powered baby items.
Invest in Climate-Controlled Storage
Climate-controlled storage keeps humidity and temperature in check in your storage unit. This can help protect your baby items from getting warped by heat or moldy from too much moisture in the air. Climate-control is a great way to make sure your items come out of storage undamaged.
