Size Guide to Storage Units
Deciding what size storage unit to invest in can be difficult. Investing in too large of a unit can create an unnecessary financial drain, but no one wants to show up to a storage unit and find that it’s too small to fit all their items into either. Whether you’re looking for a short-term solution for a move or long-term options to clear up space, storage is an investment that should be weighed.
Determine Your Budget
Before you can select a particular size of storage unit, go through your finances and determine how much you’re able or willing to spend each month for the period of time you will need the storage unit. This can help you determine the upper limit of the size you can afford. Once you know the maximum amount of space you want to pay for, you can take this into account when deciding how to pack.
Make a List of Items
When you’re packing for the move or clearing up space, decide what items you want to put in storage and make a list. This could be your furniture, small items to be boxed up, or clothing that can be stored in bags. Having an inventory allows you to estimate the number of boxes and approximate the square footage you may need.
Estimate the Size and Number of Boxes
Once you know how many items are going in the unit, having an idea of the number of boxes that will be in the unit can give you a better idea of the measurements. Knowing the size of the boxes you use can help you total up the height and width. Be careful when considering stacking (particularly if you’ll be using cardboard) as you don’t want your boxes or the items in them to get warped or damaged in storage. If you have a large number of boxes, consider investing in shelving that will allow you to take advantage of vertical size in a storage unit.
Measure the Size of Furniture in the Unit
You’ll also need to know the dimensions of the furniture going in the unit. Some furniture, like chairs or tables, may be stackable and utilize vertical space. Other, like couches, may not be as easily stacked up. For awkwardly shaped or unstackable furniture, consider the space lost around them as well.
Check the Size Guidelines of the Facility
Once you have an idea of your budget and the amount of space you need, check the availability of sizes of storage unit at the facility you are interested in. You may consider asking the employees for advice, and some facilities have size guides that can make your decision even simpler. You may be able to even see the size of the unit before finalizing your decision in some cases.
